A cleaning expert shares his top tips on how to care for your clothes and cut costs

Lipstick, makeup and wine can damage wardrobe favorites. However, Martin TerBekke recommends putting the item in the freezer before putting it in the washing machine.

Washing garments with zippers to prevent them from damaging other garments and turning jeans inside out during the wash, which prevents discoloration of the seams, are also among the pieces of advice.

Other suggestions include buttoning blouses to keep them from stretching and leaving a fist-sized gap at the top of the machine so clothes can be washed properly.

Martin, a scientist at fabric washing and care giant Ariel, said: "As strange as it may seem, the next time you put your favorite lipstick on your sweater, you're going to let it drop below freezing in your freezer."

"It clumps the lipstick so it's easy to scrape off after it's set.

"And when it comes to those stubborn stains, don't be afraid to wash your clothes in cold water.

"By washing at lower temperatures you can save up to 60% on the energy costs of your washing machine and protect your clothes – even washing at 40 degrees can double the stress on fabrics.

"Protecting the quality of clothing helps keep it out of landfill and saves us from having to buy more."

Here are some tips and tricks to help you save money.

It was based on research Ariel conducted with 2,000 adults doing laundry. It showed that 35% of those who wear jeans five times before putting them in the washing machine.

And 43% admit to wearing underwear because they refuse the washing machine.

Only 14% of adults change their bedspreads every month, while 32% do their laundry on Saturdays.

To reduce the cost of living, 62% reduce the amount of laundry they wash.

According to OnePoll, 57% prefer to wash their clothes cold to save money and energy.

Respondents believe the main benefits of lower washing temperatures are saving money (46%), energy (52%) and the environment (41%).

Martin added: "Cold washing is a great way to protect fabrics from fading.

"When it comes to those stubborn stains, don't automatically think you need to go back to a hotter wash.

"Another trick to keeping your clothes looking their best is to turn them inside out when you wash them."

The best washing tips

  • It protects your clothes during washing by turning them inside out. This prevents them from rubbing against each other and is gentle on the tissue.
  • To ensure zippers do not catch on other clothing or damage fibers, close all zippers before washing clothing.
  • Buttoned tops to prevent stretching and uneven sides.
  • First remove any lipstick stains by gently scraping off the excess. You can use waxy makeup stains to remove stains by placing the garment in the freezer for 20 minutes. Then gently scrape off any frozen spots.
  • Clear tape can be used to remove adhesive residue from sticky areas. Rinse the fabric under cold water to dissolve any glue residue.
  • Fill the machine to the top, but leave a fist-sized gap for even water distribution.
  • Cold wash to save up to 60% of the energy consumption of your washing machine
