They warned: "If you start adding large amounts of vinegar to your loads every day, your washing machine's seals and hoses will start to go bad.

"By this we mean that excessive use of vinegar in a washing machine begins to damage one of the most important parts of a washing machine: the part that prevents the appliance from leaking.

"Not to mention the significant rot damage it can cause to the wiring on the back of the unit as well."

So while vinegar is good for cleaning and refreshing clothes, households should use it sparingly to keep washing machines running.

"This helps kill bacteria and remove dirt build-up that has built up there over time. You can do this every four to six weeks to ensure your washing machine is as clean as a whistle.

They suggested using around 500g of baking soda for "best results" and to keep washing machines "clean and fresher" for longer.
