When most of us clean our fryers, we focus on the fry basket. The fry basket, or bottom of the machine, is where food is placed and debris and debris can quickly build up there. But in addition to cleaning the air fryer basket, you should also clean the vent or heating element of your machine. "Before the fat and stuff cools and hardens and becomes a problem, I would definitely clean it after cooking," Jen West tells Tasting Table. The air fryer vent may not get dirty as quickly as the basket, but it's a good idea to clean it just as frequently for optimal performance.
If you neglect ventilation, you may experience strange smells or smoke when using your deep fryer. "Food stains on the heating element can lead to smoke and unpleasant odors, so keeping it clean is obviously very important," says West. Every air fryer is a little different, but Becky Abbott and Jen West recommend cleaning the air fryer vents with warm, soapy water on a damp sponge or cloth, being careful not to get any water into the machine. "Make sure it's unplugged, turn the fryer over, and grab a toothbrush, soap, and warm water to clean the heating element," suggests West. When it comes to soaps, sponges, and abrasives to clean your deep fryer, choose non-abrasive products.
