Most of us don't enjoy cleaning, but it's a task we all have to tackle. While it's tempting to look for quick and easy solutions, sometimes taking shortcuts can backfire and lead to more work in the long run - and no one has time for that!
The internet is full of cleaning tips; If you've ever tried something that didn't work, you're not alone. I've experienced this too and it's frustrating when a "trick" makes things harder instead of easier.
To save you time and hassle, I'm sharing five cleaning tips that I tried that didn't work. We hope this helps you avoid making the same mistakes and keep your cleaning routine running smoothly!
Clean a sponge in the dishwasher
Putting a sponge in the dishwasher to clean it and remove odors seems like a good idea, but after trying it, I found it didn't work. The smells continued and I ended up throwing in the towel anyway.

The material of a sponge is porous and traps food and other dirt, encouraging the growth of bacteria. Reasons why cleaning in the dishwasher doesn't work:
Although the temperatures in the dishwasher are high, they are not enough to kill all bacteria.
The water pressure is not strong enough to remove all food, dirt and especially bacteria from the pores of the sponge.
If the sponge is heavily soiled, bacteria or food particles could enter the dishwasher and potentially contaminate dishes or cutlery washed in the same load.
A sponge should be disposable, so save yourself the trouble and just replace it.
Fabric softener sheets
Use dryer sheets to remove dust
Have you heard that wiping down baseboards and furniture with fabric softener wipes helps repel dust? I heard that too and tried it.
Much to my disappointment, the dust returned as usual. I only did this once, but doing it repeatedly creates a waxy deposit that takes more effort to remove.
Follow best practices for dusting furniture and baseboards and consider investing in an air purifier to reduce the amount of dust particles in your home.
Remove burnt food from pans
The "trick" is to place dryer sheets on the cooked food and then add hot water to cover the dryer sheets. After 2 days and several baking sheets to dry, I still had to scrub this baking dish.

Fabric softener sheets work on clothes, so in theory I can understand why it should work, but it doesn't. Learn from my experience and save time and effort waiting for the pan to clean itself.
"Trick" for failing bathtub cleaning
That sounds crazy, so don't laugh. I tried it and it was a total failure, if not a major disaster. Mix Coca-Cola with dish soap to remove soap residue.
We've all heard that Coca-Cola removes acid from a battery and leaves a chrome bumper looking new (no, I haven't tried it), so it stands to reason that this "trick" should have worked.
It was a disastrous and dismal failure, and I spent more time cleaning the sticky soap scum from the tub than if I had stuck with my original cleaning method. Lesson learned.
Trick for cleaning stainless steel

Fingerprints on stainless steel appliances are a problem for everyone and there are many ideas for removing them. However, you should not use baby oil.
Even a small amount of baby oil attracts dust and dirt like a magnet, forcing you to clean your device more often than ever before. It requires more work, so it's not possible for me, but it should be for you. Just use a stainless steel cleaner.
Clean your floor with laundry pods
Throwing detergent tablets into a bucket of hot water to clean your floors may seem smart, but it's not. Detergent ingredients can damage your flooring and cause costly damage.
Use floor cleaners appropriate for your floor type to keep them clean and protected.
Not all cleaning tips are created equal. While some save time and effort, many simply don't work or, worse, can cause damage. Before trying the last tip, rely on tried-and-true cleaning methods or advice from trusted sources to avoid unnecessary frustration.
