Care tips to avoid "maskne"

Wearing a mask has become part of everyday life as we work to slow the spread of the coronavirus. However, many mask users have discovered new skin care problems, including the increase in "maskne", which is also known as acne caused by wearing a mask.

In order to get to the bottom of these questions about skin care and to find out how you can keep your skin beautiful and clear while wearing a mask, I spoke to the dermatologist Dendy Engelman .

Here are his tips on avoiding the mask and other best practices on wearing a mask:

SARAH BOYD: What are the main problems you notice with the increasing use of masks?

DR. DENDY ENGELMAN: My patients have noticed an increase in skin problems since COVID-19. everything related to stress, such as psoriasis, eczema and seborrheic dermatitis. Due to the close relationship between skin and nervous system, increased stress levels trigger inflammatory skin diseases. I also deal with a lot of mechanical acne or mask, which is caused by a combination of friction, sweat and heat.

SB: What mistakes do people make when wearing masks when it comes to skin care and makeup?

EN: The biggest mistakes I see are that people do not wash their face mask, do not wash their faces, do not dry their skin with acne treatments, do not hydrate, do not exfoliate properly and use hard soap.

SB: Is there a type of mask that you recommend that is gentler on the skin?

EN: Silk is best because it reduces the friction on the skin.

SB: What skin care measures can people take to reduce the "mask" threat?

EN: Clean: Like our hands, we need to increase the frequency with which we clean. The best method is to clean twice. First, use an oil-based cleanser to remove bacteria and dirt (and any make-up) from your skin. Second, use a mild detergent to remove any contaminants. Move in circular movements. With this method, cleaning should take 1 to 2 minutes. Remember to clean up every time you go out or wear your mask. I love the soft cream cleaner Glo Skin Beauty or the cleaner Cetaphil gently every day (you can also use it to wash your mask).

Peeling: Peeling helps to clear the pores. Look for a mild chemical peel that not only weakens cell bonds, but also breaks down sebum before it clogs a pore. I like The Humane Company's clarifying toner because it uses salicylic acid, which breaks down sebum.

Hydrate: It is extremely important to support the skin barrier now. The moisturizer protects the moisture from the skin and the skin from bacteria and impurities. I love Glo Skin Beauty Barrier Balm because it provides nice moisturizing protection that prevents bacteria from getting into your pores.

SB: How do you recommend washing the masks and how often should we change them?

EN: Ideally, your mask should be washed after each use, especially if you sweat or spend a lot of time there. I recommend buying some so you always have a clean mask on hand.

SB: Are there any other tips to keep your skin clean with masks?

EN: The protection of the skin barrier is essential. If this is preserved, the likelihood of outbreaks is significantly reduced.
