Since almost all diffusers use a heat source to break down the components of essential oils, some residue remains. As soon as these residues have accumulated, the device can overheat or even stop working properly. This means that you should clean it regularly.

I have tried many types of diffusers over the years and now my favorite is the diffuser with Vitruvi essential oils . Regardless of what style or dispersion method I used, I took the time to read the manual for instructions on how to disassemble and clean the device. If you have lost the manual, most companies offer information online or by phone to customer service.

As a cleaning expert and advisor to various small appliance manufacturers, I recommend that you thoroughly clean a device every time its smell changes, and at least once a month to remove dust and oil residues. If you use it daily, the bi-weekly cleaning is even better. The most important thing is to clean the ultrasonic plate or chip, which breaks down the oil into basic molecules and vibrates the water to distribute the ultra-fine mist. If this component is not cleaned, the diffusion may be poor or even prevent the diffuser from working.

Steps to regularly clean a diffuser with essential oils

These are the steps I use every week to clean my essential oil diffuser. It only takes about five minutes and lets the fog flow smoothly.

  1. Make sure that the diffuser is not connected to the socket.
  2. Drain the mixture of water and oil remaining in the diffuser tank.
  3. Moisten a microfiber cloth and place a small stain of herbal dishwashing liquid such as Home Made Simple on the cloth.
  4. Clean the water tank with the soap cloth. Rinse the clean tank with fresh water and dry it completely with a dry microfiber cloth .
  5. Dip a Q-tip cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and rub it on the chip or ultrasound plate to remove any oily residue.
  6. Put the diffuser back together, fill it with water and oil and you can use it.

Steps to Thoroughly Clean an Essential Oil Diffuser

If you use your diffuser daily, you will need to do a more thorough cleaning every month to remove mineral deposits caused by water evaporation.

  1. Pull the power plug out of the socket and drain the standing water from the diffuser.
  2. Fill the diffuser water tank halfway with fresh water. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of distilled white vinegar (5% acid). The vinegar helps to dissolve mineral deposits and kill mold or mildew.
  3. Plug the diffuser into an electrical outlet and let it run for at least 15 minutes to give the vinegar solution time to work.
  4. Switch off the diffuser and pull out the mains plug. Empty the vinegar solution from the tank. Use a dry microfiber cloth to clean and dry the camera.
  5. Dip a Q-tip into rubbing alcohol and clean the ultrasound chip or any plate to remove oily residue.
  6. Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with cold water to clean the exterior and the power cord of the diffuser to remove fingerprints and dust. Pay special attention to the areas around the ventilation openings for the fan and the controls. If the vents are clogged with dust, the diffuser will overheat and will eventually stop working.
  7. Reassemble the diffuser, fill with a solution of fresh water and oil and enjoy.
