There are many reasons why people become collectors. For Alinayati binti Haji Perudin, 32, a promising young collector, it is his appreciation of the story that goes with him. It collects old paper money, old coins and international money. It also collects rare commemorative coins that celebrate past royal events.
She comes from a family of collectors and is the younger sister of eight children. He remembered how his father, Haji Perudin bin Haji Mohd Idris, gave him BND1 in 1994 when he went to school. She noticed that it was not an ordinary note. "My father told me it was old money (previous series). It became something of a sentimental value when I realized that the note would no longer circulate when I was older.
"I am a collector; I am not selling my collection. I appreciate things that have to do with the history of Brunei. I believe in keeping these items in order to pass them on to future generations. ""
Among the other precious items he holds up is an old Filipino peso coin. She was trading with a classmate with two packets of cookies; and Kue (ancient Chinese currency), transmitted by his father.
She said collectors are now breaking new ground to find rare items on the Internet.
"Many have started blogging to reach the local community." However, Alinayati found that the web has advantages and disadvantages. She advises newcomers not to trust strangers so easily.
"Ask your collector colleagues for advice first," he said.
"It doesn't matter whether you collect model trains, baseball cards, works of art or antiques. It is crucial to know as much as possible about a particular topic.
"The internet can be a great platform for getting information about your favorite hobby."
On social media, she made friends with another collector, Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka, Haji Mohamed Yunos.
"I remember talking a lot about his blog back then. Haji Mohd Rozan gave a lot of tips and we shared stories about our collections, "he recalls.
For many collectors, they have a common dilemma: space. Alinayati had to buy several showcases for her rare collectibles. "I organize myself according to categories, for example past real events or the numismatic section (silver album) or the philatelic section (stamps and covers from day one)."
Another tip to keep your collection in perfect condition is cleaning with the right cleaning equipment. If you have a cutlery collection, you need a suitable chemical cleaner for the cutlery.
For those who are just starting to collect numismatic information, Alinayati recommends keeping a small face value first.
There are many ways to raise money. For example, a note with a special serial number (your date of birth, your family register, low numbers).
From the coronation ceremony to the weddings, from the royal birthdays to the open days of Istana Hari Raya, no item is too big or too small for Alinayati to expand its collection of royal Brunei souvenirs. Among them - are rare objects from the 19th and 20th centuries.
