A $4.80 laundry detergent released 140 years ago is praised for cleaning almost anything

A retro cleaning hack is making a comeback and shoppers are loving the versatility and effectiveness of cheap supermarket picks.

Sunlight Soap was launched in 1884 and is still available at stores like Woolworths, where it costs just $4.80 .

While you may never have heard of it, the product is receiving a lot of attention on social media, where a member of the Cleaning & Organizing Inspiration Australia Facebook group started a discussion about it.

"I can't believe how effective Sunlight soap is for laundry. No wonder it's been around for so long, 140 years in fact," they said.

The post asked members who use the product to share their favorite Sunlight Soap tricks with those who have never heard of it.

"Okay, give it to me, I need to know about this magic soap," one said.

As a detergent , the bar is a popular stain treatment and is even used instead of laundry detergent.

"If you grate it and add borax it makes an excellent washing powder," commented one.

"In my opinion this is the BEST for removing stains from clothes and really brightens everything," said another.

"I literally used it on a red wine stain tonight," one wrote.

"I had a stain on a sweater and I tried everything, then I used sunscreen soap, rubbed it well and it disappeared. Then I put it in the washing machine and thought, 'I wonder why my clothes smell so good,'" said another.

Tips and tricks to make laundry easier

To use it in the laundry, members can rub it on the stain, wash it by hand, or rub it to use it in the machine .

It is also used for dishwashing by placing the soap in a metal cage that is shaken in hot water to obtain soapy water.

Others use it in the shower to bathe and wash their hair, and others also use it to bathe their dog.

One member said she uses it to both wash clothes and clean her makeup brushes.

Sun soap can also be used as a cleaning agent in other areas of the house.

"Good as a replacement for most cleaning products. Good for bathrooms and floors," one member said when asked to detail how they use it in those areas.

"Rub the soap into a bucket of hot water...absolutely bright and shiny for the floor...Scrub the soap off with a washcloth and then wash the tiles and shower floor...this is amazing... the faucets are shiny too," he explained.

Another member said they rub it in a spray bottle and add water to clean the carpet.

The discussion on Facebook brought back memories for many people whose grandparents or parents used the product to clean everything.

"It looks familiar, I think my grandmother used it," one woman said.

"Yes, it's a forgotten treasure," one commented.

Sunlight soap is also known as velvet soap and is available in many supermarkets.
