Tips for cleaning your home in the face of air pollution recognized as the number one health threat - The National

A study released this week by the University of Chicago says air pollution is more dangerous than smoking or drinking alcohol.

The University's Energy Policy Institute's Air Quality of Life Index report identified particulate air pollution, produced by industrial emissions or wildfires , as "the top external public health threat." Particulate matter is linked to lung and heart disease, stroke and cancer.

The study shows that reducing these pollutants to World Health Organization standards would increase average life expectancy by 2.3 years. In comparison, tobacco reduces global life expectancy by 2.2 years, while child and maternal malnutrition reduces it by 1.6 years.

While an institutional effort to tackle air pollution is vital, there are some ways residents can improve air quality in their homes and address looming health risks.

Plants like bamboo, dracaena, peace lily, English ivy, and Chinese periwinkle can help purify the air in your home. fake pictures

Plants not only have aesthetic value, they can also help improve indoor air quality. According to Healthline.com , some strains do this better than others, including bamboo, gum trees, dracaenas, peace lilies, snake plants, English ivy, and Chinese periwinkles.

Regular house cleaning is important to remove dangerous particles. Also, get rid of clutter as it can trap and hold dust particles. Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery with a Hepa-type vacuum once or twice a week.

Clean air conditioner vents regularly, mop hardwood, tile, and marble floors daily, and try to dry sheets and pillowcases in direct sunlight.

"Look for wallpaper that may harbor mold and examine used furniture carefully," says Dr. Beena Thomas, Pulmonary Doctor at Aster Day Surgery Center in Mankhool, Dubai.

air cleaner

Improve the air quality in your space by investing in an air purifier . Look for an option with a high CADR (Clean Air Delivery Ratio) — the higher the number, the faster the air is filtered. Ask a technician for help as there are different types and sizes of air purifiers suited to specific areas. Brands to consider include Dyson, Coway Xiaomi and Levoit.

dr Thomas also recommends avoiding smoking cigarettes, hookahs, or vaporizers indoors.

candles

Opt for beeswax candles, which have air-purifying properties as they release negative ions when burned. They are also 100% natural and will ensure your home smells great.

married pets

Another common reason for indoor air pollution is dead skin cells that our four-legged friends shed. So wash and brush your pets regularly. dr Thomas adds: "In households with pets, dispose of pet waste immediately."
