Should you follow these #CleanTok trends? A professional house cleaner intervenes.

Spring is here and those of us who live in hibernation are ready to open the windows, dust the house and let in some fresh air.

Since the pandemic, with many people busy at home, #CleanTok has gained popularity on TikTok with tons of cleaning videos from ASMR to creative hacks.

Some of these cleaning tricks sound downright incredible. To weigh in on some popular #CleanTok trends, we spoke to an experienced cleaner: Jen Boyle, co-owner of a MaidThis cleaning franchise in the Salt Lake City, Utah area and ". "Top Pro" on the thumbtack.

She told USA TODAY that she was holding a toilet brush at age 3 and was her mother's assistant during medical school.

"For me, spring cleaning really feels like this: There's a new beginning outside, everything is blooming, the windows are opening," Boyle said. "So it's about bringing this new beginning from the outside in."

Boyle helped us evaluate some popular cleaning trends online. This is what she had to say:

Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and sofa.

A classic "Sunday Reset" video shows TikTok users pouring baking soda on their mattresses and couch cushions, letting it sit and vacuuming it up.

Boyle said this may be new on the internet, but he has been using it to eliminate odors for a long time.

But your own opinion on this trick? Jump on the bed before adding the baking soda.

"When was the last time you jumped on your bed?" So jump on your bed before you do that," he said. "This releases all the allergens."

She suggests jumping in, vacuuming, adding the baking soda, and then vacuuming again. And while you're at it, spring can be a good time to flip or rotate your mattress, he said.

To clean the sofas, use a pot lid, cloth and dish soap.

Many TikToks show a cloth wrapped around a pot lid traveling over sofa cushions like a steamboat.

Boyle explains here that the pot lid increases leverage when scrubbing and prevents the rag from bunching up.

"You really get into it and create these lines," Boyle said. "These lines won't last, they won't last when you have kids!"

She said she uses a different cleaning solution than the Tide Pod, but whatever cleaning product you use, check it on one spot of the fabric first.

And most importantly: rinse your cloth well and often.

Undress yourself

Boyle says there are many ways to deep clean bedding and bedding, but filling a tub and adding vinegar or products like Oxi Booster can help freshen up bedding.

"It's definitely good advice to take off the bedding," Boyle said.

More do's and don'ts for spring cleaning

Here are some of Boyle's other tips for spring cleaning:

  • Instead of a steel Brillo pad, which can be too abrasive for some surfaces, use a wet pumice stone for stubborn dirt like toilet rings, oven doors, or bathtub deposits.
  • For example, when dusting or cleaning a refrigerator, pick up dust and dirt with a dry cloth and then use wet cleaner.
  • To freshen up your kitchen, remove the black rubber funnel from the trash can, scrub it, and place a brush in the trash can (with the lid tightly closed, of course).

But despite all the cleanup, Boyle also offered reassurance that you can move forward at your own pace.

"As a wife and mother, I want to tell you not to overwhelm yourself," Boyle said. "Every house gets dusty. Every house becomes dirty…houses are lived in and should be."
