As a result of Sunday's flood, the Environmental Health Division of the Monroe County Health Department warns that certain types of mold that grow in a very humid environment can be dangerous and cause a variety of illnesses.

"Clean it up quickly to prevent possible illness," health officials said in their statement. "If mold spores are abundant in the air, they can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, infections, and other respiratory problems." In addition, exposure can cause a development. a mold allergy that leads to long-term problems. "

Those at particular risk are those with asthma or lung problems and those who are allergic to mold, says Kim Comerzan, health officer for the Department of Health of Monroe County.

Cleaning tips include:

Identify the source of moisture and try to stop it. Clean, disinfect and dry the moldy area. Use a soap or detergent without ammonia, with warm water or a commercially available cleaner. Rinse all objects with clean water.

Molds can invade drywall, carpeting and insulation, health officials said, adding that "these materials should generally be discarded when saturated".

A solution of one to two cups of bleach per gallon of water can be used for disinfection; A wet-dry vacuum can take up the additional bleach solution. Anyone working with bleach should wear goggles and rubber gloves and ventilate the area by opening the doors and windows.
