Watch live: Douglas County officials take stock of tornado damage and clean up

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW / KWCH) - Update: Emergency officials from Douglas County announced further details on a tornado that hit counties Douglas and Leavenworth on Tuesday night, causing significant damage. The National Meteorological Service states that he has evaluated the storm for an EF-4 tornado after a preliminary investigation.

According to official figures, 17 people were injured in the storm. Most of them were treated and discharged from hospitals in the area, but three remain in the hospital. No deaths were reported.

The rescue personnel recorded around 160 houses, buildings and other structures. It is estimated that 40 of these structures suffered considerable damage and about 25 moderate damages.

Almost 3,900 Westar customers are currently without electricity. About 300 Westar workers work in the region to restore energy.

Douglas Co.'s emergency management is calling for everyone to avoid areas that were damaged by heavy storms and tornadoes on Tuesday night to start assessing damage.
