Leave the cleaning to the experts - East Gippsland

newspaper

Residents who wish to return to their homes damaged or destroyed to begin the cleaning process are asked to wait for experts.

The Eastern Gippsland County Council awaits an announcement from the Victorian government and the Bushfire Response and Recovery Task Force on how to coordinate large-scale public and private property cleanup. The cleaning after the fire on Black Saturday 2009 was coordinated and financed by the state.

The East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Cr John White, said he knew that residents wanted to start cleaning and begin the recovery process.

"This cleaning will be the beginning of recovery for many people and I appreciate the need, especially cleaning damaged homes," said Cr White.

"We want this to be done correctly without the residents putting themselves at risk of being exposed to risks. Buildings and other structures that have been damaged or burned in a forest fire pose a variety of potential risks, including asbestos and chemicals. In addition, contaminated waste, if unknowingly brought to our landfill, endangers the staff and property of the Council.

"The East Gippslanders are very practical and self-sufficient, but it's better to leave a few things to people who have the experience, the right equipment for the job, and the necessary safety equipment," said Cr White.

Last week, the emergency services carried out an initial assessment of property damage in the areas affected by the fire.

"After being notified by the person responsible for the incident, the council is conducting a more detailed safety assessment of the properties damaged by the fire and giving advice to the owners. Insurance advisors should also assess the damage related to claims processing." said Cr White.

"We know that it can be frustrating, but the security of our community is a priority for us."

The Prime Minister and the Victorian Government responded to our urgent needs during this emergency. This is another urgent need, and I am sure that the details of the cleanup will be announced very soon so that our residents can start collecting the parts of these wildfires.

"I have also asked local business people and companies with broad community support to prioritize this work."

When the return to the properties is safe, the homecoming kits will be available. This includes overalls, masks, gloves, etc.
