Cleaning expert shares nifty white vinegar tip for washing sportswear "correctly"

With the gyms closed during the lockdown, many Brits have turned to fitness at home. Whether it's HIIT training or yoga, your fitness equipment is sure to be a little sweaty. To get the most out of your sportswear and to ensure that it is not damaged, Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, shares his top tips on how to wash sportswear properly.

In theory, it sounds good, but in sportswear it actually inhibits your ability to absorb and trap moisture, according to Dimitrov.

Try using white fabric softener instead of using fabric softener during the final rinse cycle.

laundry detergent

Using too much detergent creates excess soapy water, which can trap dirt, bacteria and unpleasant odors.

While using more detergent seems like a good idea, it is a common misconception that using more detergent will make your laundry more efficient.

Fresh laundry

Heat can affect the elasticity of your sportswear. Always wash your sportswear at the lowest possible temperature.

According to the laundry expert, an effective detergent ensures that your clothes stay clean despite the colder temperatures.

Treat sweaty items

If you have a particular item that has actually absorbed sweat, you may need to pre-treat it before you put it in the machine.

Dimitrov said the best way to do this is to soak them in a solution of water and white vinegar an hour before washing.

The vinegar smell disappears after washing.

Wash it inside out

The laundry expert said washing clothes inside out actually increases their durability.

By turning your clothing inside out, you ensure that the outer layer of your sportswear does not rub against other items of clothing in your clothing.

A mesh laundry bag can also prevent this.
