The documentary series 'The Canine Condition' sheds light on the homeless dog crisis - Green Matters

There are many ways to make your dog's life greener, but perhaps the most important decision a dog parent can make is to follow the " adopt, don't buy " mantra. Actress Jacqueline Piñol, best known for her roles in Bosch and various Spider-Man projects , learned the hard way. In 2006, he bought a pug at a pet store and ignored the homeless dog crisis or the harsh reality behind the dog breeding industry. When she suddenly learned the truth two years later, she was devastated, but her feelings drove her to act.

Since then, Piñol has grown into a strong advocate for dogs. She is mother of a dog with a breed of six puppies, five of which she adopted (and recently became mother to a baby!). She is also the host of The Canine Condition , which is both a podcast and a new documentary series (or, as she calls it, a "DOGumentary" series) that will premiere in Fall 2021. Lovers, some dogs will definitely love the documentary series. This is "a trip across the United States, seeing the different sides of the homeless crisis in cities big and small."

Each episode focuses on different nonprofit dog rescue organizations or people working to improve dog rescue. "My goal is to provide the general public with tangible options that they can trust so that more of us can take action and help make a positive difference for dogs and people," Piñol said in an email exclusive to Green Matters . "The stories we cover will inspire you, educate you and empower you to act. "

The dog is in very good condition, so have the tissues ready. "One of my favorite topics on the series of podcasts and documentaries is seeing the homeless ... dogs paired with veterans, children, or prisoners and being guided through rehabilitation programs that encompass the needs of both humans and dogs," he continues. "Seeing this dog-human bond and witnessing the transformations will make you go beyond what you can believe."

GREEN QUESTIONS: Why is it important to adopt, not buy?

JACQUELINE PIÑOL: Adoption means saving the life of a dog that would otherwise never live because we have too many homeless dogs and not enough families to adopt. They are slaughtered across the country every day. By "buying" a dog, we are adding to this overcrowding of the homeless as there are not enough families to care for every puppy that is born and they end up in shelters, abandoned or neglected.

GM: What might surprise people when they learn about the dog breeding industry?

JP: The livestock industry has very mild laws. If people knew how little oversight and regulation exists for ranchers across the country, it would be more disgusting than hearing the truth once and for all and taking steps to change the way people use dogs for profit.

GM: How did you feel when you found out about the homelessness crisis that you bought a dog from a pet store?

JP: I was very confused and sad. I bought a pug from a pet store in 2006 and found out in 2008 that there were many pugs that needed to be rescued! He had something to do. In 2009 I was able to welcome a pug who, thanks to a rescue organization, was taken into a beautiful home. It was then that I discovered how rewarding it is to house a dog. You don't know what you don't know, but once you do, you do better. As cheesy as it sounds, I know the change you want to see.

GM: What are your favorite tips for caring for environmentally friendly dogs?

JP: Use compostable dog waste bags ! Get straps made from recycled hemp or polyester. You are still very strong. Save money and water by having a dry shampoo or waterless shampoo on hand. With six puppies, I'll break the bank by grooming them frequently, so I'll keep them clean longer by brushing them frequently and using a waterless shampoo. And make sure the companies you buy these products from are not tested on animals . This is important and part of my podcast post.

Editor's note: Piñol says you can find out more about it in this episode of The Canine Condition podcast .

GM: What are your number 1 pros and cons for caring for six dogs?

JP: Pro # 1: I get a lot of love every day. The six furry babies look forward to me every day, no matter how often I walk through the door. Fill my heart

Disadvantage # 1: I collect feces every day of my life, many, several times a day. It also means that I smell dog poop up close every day. Funny times.

GM: As an actress, have you ever worked on a project with animal actors on set? How are dogs and other animals treated on set?

JP: Yes! I played a vet, Dr. Tawni Martinez, in this cute family movie called Monster Mutt . I worked with a border collie and it was a doll. She was very obedient. I have seen that the handlers are strict and precise in their direction and in my experience this dog really trusted its master. We walked the dog quickly through the scenes so he could take breaks. Trust me, if I discovered something was wrong with a dog's safety or treatment, I would be the first to get in touch!
