Tips for Buying Sustainable Salmon - National Geographic

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, which provides consumers with scientific and sustainable seafood recommendations, advises avoiding all farmed Atlantic salmon from Canada, Norway, Chile and the United States, most of Scotland, due to various environmental concerns. The best options, experts say, are farmed salmon from British Columbia, Maine, New Zealand, the Orkney Islands in Scotland, and the Faroe Islands in Denmark. Seafood Watch supports Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) -certified farmed salmon and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) -certified wild salmon. MSC certification for some fisheries, such as Mexican tuna , for example, is controversial due to concerns about dolphins and other accidentally caught marine species. But Seafood Watch Senior Program Director Ryan Bigelow says the Monterey Bay Aquarium has independently verified that all ASC and MSC certified salmon meet their sustainability standards.
