How to Clean a Mattress: A Common Household Item Removes Stains in 4 'Easy Steps'

Humans spend about a third of their lives sleeping, so it is important that the mattresses we sleep on are clean and hygienic. Mattresses may look clean, but if you've never cleaned yours and have had it for a while, chances are your mattress is harboring germs.

Mattresses can harbor everything from dust mites to fur, dirt, oils, sweat and other debris.

Allergy sufferers who have pets or like to snack in bed should clean their mattresses more frequently to avoid unwanted bacteria.

With that in mind, Jonathan Warren, mattress specialist and director of Time4Sleep has shared his "four easy steps" to cleaning mattresses exclusively with Express.co.uk.

Jonathan said we should aim to clean our mattresses twice a year to keep them clean and fresh.

He explained: "We spend an average of 19,000 hours sleeping on the same mattress, so it's not surprising that they can harbor germs and bacteria like dust on dead skin and oils.

"With that in mind, we recommend cleaning your mattress twice a year to keep your sleeping space fresh, fight allergy flare-ups and prolong the life of your mattress.

"Il est préférable de nettoyer votre matelas une fois au printemps ou en été afin qu'il puisse sécher grace au temps plus chaud - sans compter que nous sommes anfahrs de perspirer davantage pendant cette période - puis de nouveau pendant les mois d'hiver à the end of the year.

"Cleaning your mattress can be done in four easy steps, starting with a vacuum, baking soda, mattress cleaning spray and a damp cloth."

1. Remove stains

First, homeowners need to remove stubborn stains on the mattress surface.

Remove stains with baking soda (also called baking soda), then scrub the area with a cleaning spray.

Baking soda is commonly used in baking and is an excellent cleaning agent as it dissolves dirt and grease and is an effective deodorant.

This should, according to Jonathan, "avoid the stain from getting bigger". Then wipe off any residue with a damp cloth.

4. Replace your mattress

Jonathan said mattresses need to be replaced every seven to 10 years to prevent a build-up of allergies or ailments.

"He explained, 'If yours has reached that threshold and you are having trouble sleeping and experiencing discomfort or an allergy flare, you should consider replacing it.'

"A pocket spring mattress is often the most popular option as it offers an excellent level of support and comfort as the springs react independently to adapt to your sleeping position.

"If allergies are a problem, you can find pocket spring mattresses with multiple layers of hypoallergenic fillers so your sleep isn't disturbed.

"Continuing to sleep on an old mattress will do more harm than good and even damage your posture, leading to conditions like kyphosis, 'sad shoulders' and even numb hands, our recent posture research shows. So consider replacing the mattress for every seven of them in 10 years.
