Before you tackle stains or dirt on your sofa, you should first take a look at maintenance. Most sofas come with a cleaning label that tells you what you can and cannot use to clean your sofa. This is especially the case with leather, velvet or suede sofas, which can partially damage the material.

The instructions are in the form of codes and the key for each letter is as follows:

  • W - Water-based cleaner. This means you can clean the upholstery with water.
  • B/W - Solvent and water based cleaners. This makes it safe to use solvents and water-based cleaners on your sofa.
  • S - Solvent. This means that you should not use water to clean your sofa, only a special solvent-based cleaner.
  • X - Vacuum only.

Once you've figured out the best way to freshen up your sofa, you can move on to a thorough cleaning.
