As the month of March slowly but surely comes to an end, some may be thinking about starting some spring cleaning . This is natural as spring has truly arrived in most of the United States.
For pet owners, there is always another level to cleaning. Whether you need to clean your pets' hair, are afraid to move them, or simply need safe cleaning products, this can be a hassle.
Luckily, Minnie B. Miller, aquarist and creator of the website Fish in Aquarium, gave us some tips. Honestly, many of her tips can be used for any pet, not just fish, but there is one fish-related tip you should keep in mind.
Whether you're cleaning up after the holidays , have a free weekend, or just want a clean house, keep these pet-friendly cleaning tips in mind.
I think people forget Minnie's first tip: Make sure you use pet-safe cleaning products. It can be a little overwhelming considering all the different options available, but sometimes simple is best. While you can use something store-bought, using natural ingredients is a good alternative as you can use products like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Of course, you should always make sure to keep your cleaning supplies out of the reach of your pets.
The next tip is for anyone who owns fish: make sure you take this into account when cleaning. Specifically, he explained that it is important to keep the tank as clean as possible by ensuring that no fumes, dust or dirt enters. In addition, it is advisable to cover the aquarium while cleaning so as not to stress or disturb the fish.
These next two tips go hand in hand because the first is to make sure you open the windows and let in fresh air when you clean. These fumes are not good for you or your pets. Additionally, it is best to treat pet accidents as quickly as possible. This not only makes cleaning easier, but also prevents stains and bacteria from settling in the area. Plus, your pet could return to the same spot, making the point moot.
Finally, Minnie shared that it is a good idea to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter as it helps remove pet hair and dust. If you're already starting to clean because of pet hair, be sure to also clean your pet's belongings, including all bedding and toys. With spring cleaning coming up, there's no better time to start than now. Thank you Minnie for sharing these tips with us and honestly motivating me to clean my house.
