TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Spring is almost here with the return of lawn care and the costs that come with it.

KETK sat down with Serrano Irrigation to learn more about the basic maintenance and equipment you can use to keep your water bill at a manageable level.

"Pressure regulating heads end up paying for themselves, so you may end up with a big bill every time you turn your sprinklers on for the first time, but in the long run you will save a lot of money," Serrano said.

Serrano suggested paying attention to the weather, such as watering when the sun isn't shining. Technology can also help: There are now various applications that allow you to monitor your garden from your phone.

"If you are not at home, the adjustments are made automatically for you. Adjust ignition time and watering time," Serrano said.

He explained that leaks often occur when the system is running. So keep an eye out for dry spots.

"Our sprinklers are equipped with check valves to prevent water from coming out of the sprinklers when the system is turned off and retain the water. "So if you don't check it before winter, you may still experience leaks afterward," says Serrano.

Of course, if another cold snap occurs in East Texas, make the usual cold weather preparations.

"Turn off the backflow, turn off the sprinkler system; Sometimes we have exposed check valves and you can wrap them with insulation," Serrano said.

According to the Water Texas Coalition, excess water is a major problem in our state. So if you don't have a water sensor or system timer, it might be time to get them.
