COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) - For many Ohioans, the start of spring means spring cleaning, which the state fire marshal says can help prevent fires.
As with any time of year, firefighters say it's imperative to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries, are working and are clean. Any detector older than 10 years should be replaced immediately.
When cleaning your home, a good fire prevention step is to reduce clutter, which can pose a fire risk and block access for first responders. Authorities say everything should be stored well, away from boilers and water heaters.
"It is very important that Ohioans take a few extra moments during their spring cleaning to inspect their homes for potential fire hazards," Fire Chief Kevin Reardon said in a news release. "Even a small effort can make a big difference in preventing tragedies." »
It is also important to check all electrical cords in your home as they can pose a fire hazard if they become damaged and frayed over time. Any cables that show damage or wear should be replaced immediately. Authorities warn against connecting too many cables to a single outlet to avoid overloading circuits.
A dryer can also pose a fire hazard. Officials recommend making sure the vent pipe is not clogged and the outside vent is open when the dryer is in use. It is also important to keep all flammable substances away from the dryer and to completely dry clothes that have come into contact with such materials outdoors before washing and drying them.
Outside your home, you can remove dead leaves, twigs or other plant debris to reduce the risk of a fire spreading. If you own a grill, it is important to ensure that it has been thoroughly cleaned and that there are no leaks in the propane tank hose.
Officials said gasoline should also be stored outside the home in approved containers and never used as a cleaning agent.
