WASHINGTON's work glove soaked in water on Saturday while cleaning the names engraved on the black granite walls of the Vietnam Veterans Monument.

Pence, son of a Korean war veteran and naval father, will later be at Arlington National Cemetery.

But he started his day in cleaning gear and arrived in the National Mall in the distance, shortly after dawn, wearing jeans, old cowboy boots, and yellow gloves over the Capitol Dome.

"Hello everyone," Pence told the group of about 40 volunteers. "Mike Pence. Congratulations to you all for being here Happy Veterans Day."

The other cleaners, New York USA mortgage servants, had already prepared the wall for cleaning by removing flowers, flags, photos, boots, helmets, crowns, and other souvenirs from the base.

In addition to quitting offers, visitors are asked to note down the 58,286 names of those who were killed or disappeared during the war. Volunteers regularly clean the wall, keeping the surface "reflective and peaceful," as designer Maya Lin wanted.

Cleaners usually spray hoses against the wall before and after brushing with large brushes. The minus on Saturday, however, required a more practical handling of sponges and paper towels.

"I do not know why I wear gloves because I just do not feel my fingers," said a volunteer.

After arriving at the Memorial with his wife, Pence picked up an orange cleaning bucket labeled "Let's do it" in an area near the middle of the wall.

"Do you have a job?" Asked he.

Wylie Gilbert, 30, of Maryland, gave Pence some cleaning tips: scrub vigorously from left to right.

"They're rubbing me and I'm drying myself," Vice President Ryan Zinke told the Secretary General of the Interior.

Pence rubs and cleans himself, except for a few higher digits that got the biggest tine for him.

Robert Salazar was the most important name and one of the wall sections cleaned by Pence.

While the Vice President wore work gloves, Karen Pence tried to wash her hands with her bare hands, causing her fingers to turn red quickly.

"How are you, honey?" Her husband asked in a moment.

Gilbert then said that Karen Pence had told him that he did not care about practical work because he had time to think.

"Where are you from, ma'am?" Gilbert asked, working side by side.

"We are from Indiana," said Karen Pence.

Gilbert told Pences that he served in the Army National Guard and also worked for NewDay USA.

"Thank you for your services," said the Vice President.

"Thanks for your and that you came here this morning," said Gilbert.

Pence also spoke to ranger James Pierce, who was injured in Afghanistan in 2012 when he was a member of the National Guard. Pierce, 34, is one of three survivors of a suicide bomber attack that killed 56 people.

Pierce talked to Pences about departure with the volunteers and said he was in the park service as his dream job. After several reconstructive operations, Pierce was admitted to Park Service via Operation Guardian before being offered a full-time position.

"It's great," Pierce said about Pence's visit. "The vice president comes out and washes the wall."

He told the volunteers that he had met a wheelchair veteran who had traveled on a trip to the National Mall, bringing war veterans from across the country to war memorials.

After Pierce told his story to the veteran, the man got up and greeted him. The woman with the veteran cried and told Pierce that it was the first time he had stood up and greeted him for four years. He died shortly after the trip, Pierce said.

"You never know what your impression is," Pierce told the group. "They volunteer for the men and women who gave their lives for our great country."

Before leaving to prepare for his visit to Arlington National Cemetery, he posed for a group photo in the center of the memorial.

"If the American flag is hovering ..." NewDay CEO Tom Lynch said, "Greetings," the group responded.
