"Spring is traditional when we clean the house thoroughly," said environmental health specialist Dr. Lisa Ackerley across from the mirror. "But the fall cleaning is even more important."

Proper vacuuming is a good place to start, Ackerley adds, because "Carpet that appears clean can still contain a lot of dirt, bacteria and mold."
