The author of the new book Thrifty Household , Noela MacLeod AO, said her guidance was the result of years of family advice and solutions passed down by her grandmother and mother.

"The idea for the book came up in 2005 when I was president and we all had to give little Christmas presents ," Noela told ABC .

"Since I didn't have time to make homemade gifts, I decided to print out all of these little tips that I've been collecting for 40 years and give them away.

The book compiles all of Noela's and more family councils in the Rural Women's Association over the years.

`` Getting shoe polish wasn't easy during the war so my grandmother told me to peel a banana and rub your shoes inside out before doing it. a rag and rub it in, 'said Noela.

She added that her grandmother also sprayed her windows with a solution of vinegar and water.

Noela's job was to clean the windows with newspaper, which she still does today.

"Why buy a bottle when you already have something at home?" Asked Noela.

The advice in her book is what her grandmother followed until she was born in 1883, and then her mother followed and died.
