Tips to prepare your home for winter

Cut the branches of the fireplace and the house.

Trees must now be felled to avoid damage from the winter storm.

Giroud Tree and Lawn explains how homeowners can prepare their entire property inside and out for the cold winter months.

Huntingdon Valley, PA, USA December 3, 2020 / EINPresswire.com / - Temperatures are falling and this change in weather is taking a toll on a home and yard. Homeowners can now take steps to ensure that everything runs smoothly during the cold season.

Prepare the outside of the house for winter
Owners should look at the trees in the garden, especially those near the house. Are you in good health? Are there members who are supported next to or in the house? Trees near the house that are not in good condition can be dangerous, especially in winter. Ice and snow can form and break branches, damaging roofs, breaking windows, and shutting down power lines. It is best to hire an ISA-certified arborist to cut or remove the trees that are needed to protect the home and family over the winter.

Clogged gutters do not drain water properly, which means that water builds up around the base and eventually causes very costly damage. Wooden decks should also be checked for loose nails or rotten boards that need to be replaced. The wood needs to be resealed every 2 years to protect the deck from inclement weather and basic wear and tear.

Prepare the interior of the house for winter
There are also some things to check in the house. Start by replacing the air filters. Air filters should be replaced every one to three months, depending on the filter type. Some are meant to take longer than others. Clean filters help your heating and air conditioning system work more efficiently and last longer. The stove and air conditioning also need to be repaired. If you take care of your air conditioning now, you will avoid long waiting times in spring, the high season for air conditioning repairs. Ovens are usually shut down in the colder seasons. An inspection and repair is therefore a great way to avoid a disaster.

Prepare your equipment for winter
Speaking of cooling, check out the refrigerator. Clean the coils underneath for more efficient operation, and clean and check the door seals. This prevents air leaks that waste energy.
Then go to the range hood. This filter becomes uncomfortable due to grease and food odors. Cleaning the filter ensures a longer service life and prevents fire.

Make sure the dryer vent is clean and clear. Dryer lint is easily flammable and should be removed immediately. A clogged vent can also damage the dryer and make it less efficient.

Do not forget about the fireplace , which needs to be checked and cleaned every year. When wood is burned, creosote penetrates the fireplace mantle over time and creates a serious fire hazard. This is also a good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Prevents pipes from freezing
Check the pipes to make sure they are insulated. Pipes in unheated areas of the house are at risk of freezing and must therefore be insulated. On very cold nights, open the cabinets where the pipes are hidden so the heat can reach them. The thermostat should never be set below 55 degrees, otherwise the water in the pipes can freeze.
