Mosquito Expert Offers Five Tips to Keep Gardens Mosquito Free - Fingerlakes1.com

Mosquitoes have ravaged New York state and other parts of the country all summer, and there are still a few hot days left in 2021.

This summer's weather has created a healthy environment for mosquitoes to thrive, especially during cyclones and floods.

So what can we do about these pesky mosquitoes?

Joe Malinowski , Director of Pest Control for the Mosquito Authority and Pest Authority, shares some tips on how to keep your garden safe from mosquitos before and after heavy rainfall.

Here is your "five Ts" checklist:

  • Turn. Turn items over in your yard to reduce stagnant water. Eliminating stagnant water will reduce the breeding ground for mosquitoes. "Look out for bird baths, downspouts near gutters, drainage basins, and tire swings," says Malinowski. "Other popular places for mosquitoes are dog waterers, plant coasters, and recycling bins and trash cans. "
  • Litter. Remove garden debris such as cut grass, dead leaves, excess mulch, and fallen branches. "By keeping a clean garden, you further reduce the main breeding grounds for mosquitoes and ticks," says Malinowski.
  • To plan. Make sure the tarpaulins are tight, says Malinowski. Tarpaulins that are spread loosely over piles of wood, grills, boats, or sports equipment hold enough water to attract mosquitoes.
  • Takes care. Keep track of home maintenance needs that can contribute to water stagnation. "Evaluate areas where there are puddles of water, such as near water taps, air conditioning, French drains, or uneven lawns," says Malinowski. "Check the irrigation systems to make sure they are not leaking or providing shelter for the brood. Clean the gutters and make sure the downspout is properly connected. Keep your lawn height low and remove weeds. Be sure to remove hollow logs from the property. Level areas where the water has stood for a few hours.
  • To team up. In addition to taking precautions about your property, Malinowski says talking to neighbors is an important part of mosquito and tick control. "Townhouses and houses with little space between lots mean mosquitos can breed on a neighbor and affect their property," he says.

"Mosquitoes can be a major nuisance, especially after a storm," says Malinowski. "They have the potential to spread disease, and the likelihood increases dramatically as their population grows. Therefore, during the cleaning work, every effort should be made to eliminate mosquito breeding places in the house. "
