Energy expert gives tips to make radiators "more efficient": "Increase performance!"

Before turning on the heat and paying hundreds of dollars for heating, it's a good idea to make sure your radiators are working efficiently. spoke exclusively to heating and energy expert Matthew Jenkins My Job Quote who shared his four tips to ensure you get the most out of your heating.

How can you make your radiators more energy efficient?

1. Keep your radiators clean

Matthew said: "When a radiator gets hot, the air around it expands, which eventually collects dust and reduces the efficiency of your radiator.

"You have to clean regularly; Vacuum the dust and then clean the surface of the radiator to increase its performance.

If there is dust inside the cooler, there are commercially available cooler core cleaning brushes that remove dust from every nook and cranny.

Alternatively, you can make your own cleaning brush out of a wire hanger and a microfiber cloth.

3. Examine the area for cold spots

Matthew continued: "If your radiator is wall mounted, sludge can build up inside and prevent it from working properly.

"Gently touch the underside of the radiator and look for cold spots to see if scale has built up.

"If you see any, it's obvious that sludge has built up over time and you need to pay a professional."

Another reason the radiator can be cold at the bottom is that it contains air. Therefore, consider bleeding the radiators.

4. Organize heat by space

"One of the main benefits of electric heaters is the ability to customize individual heating schedules for each room," he added. "It's a very effective approach to reducing operational costs.

"By only heating the spaces you use, you can save energy by not having to heat the whole house if you spend the rest of the night in the living room or bedroom.

"This allows you to keep operating costs to a minimum by saving energy room by room, hour by hour and minute by minute."

5. Do not restrict airflow

Some see radiators as an eyesore and try to hide them with radiator covers or large pieces of furniture like sofas.

By doing so, you risk increasing your energy bills.

When a radiator is covered, heat cannot circulate properly and therefore not work efficiently.
