Considering the liquid as a detergent should not be confused with the detergent itself. Some things like regular water or dish soap or laundry detergent don't work well on the windshield. In fact, real detergent can cause streaks, even when the towels are new and of the highest quality.
Commercial washer fluid contains methanol and other alcohols such as ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze. It is the alcohols that break down dirt on the windshield and are also used to thaw winter versions of windshield washer fluid.
As a warning, online medical information resource MedlinePlus.gov describes the alcohols used in windshield washer fluid as toxic. Store and handle solutions like any other potentially harmful material.

- Snowy and frigid winter climates require a liquid that will not freeze and will help de-ice the windshield.
- When it rains, choose a washer fluid that helps the wipers cover the rain from the windshield to preserve visibility
- For very dusty or dirty traffic environments, e.g. B. rural areas or driving on the road, a liquid that can remove dirt and insects from the windshield is important.
- When planning a car trip, check the weather conditions and use a liquid that gives the best results in that weather
Windshield washer fluid is not a 100% solution for a clean windshield. It is as well done as the windscreen wipers and the condition of the windscreen. "Yes, you still need to wash the windshield and all other windows," says O'Mara. Other important information for maximum safety and visibility includes:
- Keep the windshield in good condition, cracks, chips and other damage will affect the line of sight
- Replace wipers regularly as they age, crack and streak, rather than cleaning them
- Damaged wipers can damage the windshield
