How to Keep Your RV Clean With Dogs (5 Tips) - RV Lifestyle

There's nothing quite like traveling with dogs other than traveling with dogs in a clean RV! How to keep your RV clean with dogs as travel companions...

Dogs make the BEST travel companions... except for their fur. And his slime. And his muddy paws.

Jennifer and I would know what it's like as well as anyone. We were traveling with a very furry 75lb Norwegian Hound named Bo!

Bo might have been better suited to a dog sled than an RV, but traveling just wouldn't be the same without him.

This is how we learned how to keep our RV clean when traveling with a dog. A very shaggy big dog (worth saying that again!)

We are not alone either. A member of our RV lifestyle group is trying to learn how to do the same and asked the group for advice.

She published:

"OMG how do you keep your RV clean with two huge dogs? đŸ€ŠđŸ»‍♀️ We just bought 2 acres to build on and will be RVing full time until our house is built next year. My boxer shorts bring so much dirt đŸ˜« "

The community came to his aid with over 150 comments . So I'm going to share some of their tips, as well as some of ours!

5 tips to keep your RV with dogs clean

From carpets to wet wipes to cleaning habits, there were many helpful answers. Here are some of the most common suggestions to make life in an RV more comfortable for you and your furry friend.

By the way, I highly recommend checking out Bo's Favorite Pet Camping Accessories . This is an Amazon shopping list of all our (and Bo's) favorite dog RV accessories.

1. Sweep or vacuum every day

I know what the last thing you want to do is when camp is clean, but we all have to do it. Especially if you are traveling with a pet.

The key to this strategy with dogs is to do it daily! It seems like the only way to get ahead of the furry game, so to speak.

If you sweep or vacuum daily, it only takes a few minutes. But somehow the time required increases exponentially with each day of waiting. I think it has to do with the light dog hairs that move everywhere when you walk or have the air conditioning on.

So if you vacuum or sweep while driving to the RV during the day, don't let hair stray around as you move through the night.

2. Get a good mat (or TWO!)

Another suggestion that came up a lot was to invest in a good mat to place at the bottom of your RV's steps. Many also suggest that you place one at the top of your RV's stairs. Do we agree!

Preventing dirt from getting into your RV in the first place is half the battle. So you don't want just any old carpet. Some rugs grab and hold the dirt off the dog's (and your husband's) paws much better.

Luckily, our VR community came to the rescue with specific product suggestions. Here are some options that work well for them:

I would also recommend Gorilla Grip Heavy Duty Traffic Doormat 2 pack . You can place one below and one above. It grips well in the RV and has a low profile, making it less of a trip hazard than some options. Also, you can easily vacuum it up and even use a broom for clumps.

3. Keep wet wipes by the door

Many recommended leaving a towel and baby wipes at the door. Any towel will do, but I recommend Earth Rated Dog Wipes . These are herbal wipes that are 99% bio-based. This means they are compostable for campers using a compostable toilet.

For really muddy spots, you can take Joyce's advice and have a shallow water pan ready for your dog at the bottom of the stairs. Followed by one of the mats mentioned above.

4. Make your dog comfortable outside

Several RV's have suggested that the best way to keep your dog-friendly RV clean is to keep your dogs outside as much as possible. This means a kennel or outside bed and a dog park.

Having a pet bed and outdoor play area is great whether your dog is sleeping or not. Our Bo sleeps inside with us but likes to rest outside during the day.

You should look at The Best Pet Accessories for Camping and How to Keep Your Dog Cool When Camping for these tips to keep in mind.

The raised shade dog bed or foldable pet bed are great options, as is an adjustable dog playpen.

5. Accept being a little messy

The truth is that you will never have an immaculate RV when traveling with dogs. If you don't spend more time cleaning than adventuring, it's just not going to happen.

So the last and best advice I can give you is cleanse as best you can and accept the rest. Facebook users agree that traveling with dogs is worth the extra work and less-than-pristine RV.

Many even shared that they chose RVs because they wanted to travel with their pets. We hear this all the time, and we certainly get the sentiment. Jennifer and I have always traveled with a dog and always will! Don't worry about the mess that comes with it.
