Food, clothing, home environment, cleaning tips to avoid dry skin and prevent eczema in winter

Eczema, also known as dry dermatitis, is common in winter. When the temperature drops, sebum secretion decreases. Therefore, moisture is easily lost from the skin. And the skin becomes dry, causing itching, inflammation, peeling, flaking and other problems.

Hu Yihsuan, a dermatologist at Yes Clinic in Taiwan, said eliminating dry skin can prevent eczema in winter. She also shared tips on how to prevent and treat winter itch, from the bathroom to food, clothing, home environment and more.

Hu pointed out that people should pay attention to the following points when taking a bath to reduce dry skin.

1. Before the bath: Choose gentle bath products
Try to choose a bath product that doesn't contain soap or lye and has a pH close to that of the skin, which is around 5.5.

Hu said bath products with strong cleaning power and alkaline ingredients are likely to lead to dry skin. It's best to use mild surfactants with simple ingredients that can reduce the risk of skin allergies.

2. When bathing: The water temperature should not be too high
Water that is too hot can easily remove sebum and prevent the skin from retaining moisture effectively.

3. After the bath: Apply the lotion in five minutes
The five minutes after bathing is referred to as the "golden period of hydration and water lock." Hu said that after drying the body, one should apply the lotion while the skin is still damp for the best moisturizing effect.

Hu said that applying lotion frequently is the best way to relieve itching. Applying too much lotion bought from pharmacies without a prescription can easily damage the skin if the steroid content is high.

So how do you choose a lotion? Hu suggested that people should not only check whether the pH level is similar to that of the skin, but also choose moisturizers rich in plant sterols, vitamin A and vitamin E.

clothing and home environment.

For those with rashes or sensitive skin, Hu suggested the best option for your underwear is pure cotton. He said that wearing thermal clothing in winter is popular these days. However, since it consists of chemical fibers when it is hot and this becomes more sensitive, thermal clothing is not suitable for all skin types.

Hu said that in winter, some people like to turn on the heater fan and blow directly on the skin. And this is likely to result in dry, itchy skin. He suggested that by measuring the humidity level in the house, you can get a humidifier to improve the dry environment accordingly.

meal

In terms of diet, Hu said people who already have a rash should not eat too many nutritious or spicy foods, such as ginger duck, sesame oil chicken and spicy fondue. For example, she said that an eczema patient who was almost cured flared up again after eating ginger duck three times a week.

Hu also pointed out that there are many foods on the market that contain refined starches and high-glycemic index foods, which are bad for health and also make eczema worse.

Hu believes that eating more fresh raw vegetables and foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin E can prevent dry skin and achieve beautiful skin.
