Towels are an item of laundry that divides many people: some prefer a rougher feel, others a soft, luxurious cuddly feel.
But if you're on the soft team, your quest for fluffy towels could be derailed by a faux pas many are guilty of: regular use of fabric softener.
While it's ironic that households rely on fabric softeners to reduce pilling and add a velvety feel to most garments, their effect on towels can be quite the opposite.
In fact, even the fluffiest, highest quality towels can be reduced to an undesirable state of stiffness. Fear not, as white vinegar is known to be the savior for those looking for softer towels.
However, as Emma Peake pointed out on the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, vinegar alone may not be enough without the correct drying technique.
Emma came up with the idea while discussing paper towels with a fellow cleaning enthusiast and revealed a simple solution.
She said: "Whether I use white vinegar to wash my towels or not, I find that the only way to instantly soften them is to tumble dry them. Very quick and easy. It only takes 10 minutes.
Ms Hinch 's supporters also agreed to this method. Caroline Deegan wrote: "Tumble drying is the only way. »
Tina Preece shared her laundry secret: "I started by line drying the clothes and then put them in the dryer for 10 minutes. I've avoided using fabric softener and vinegar and my towels have never been so soft.
Alison Kirkland shared her preference: "I like my towels to be scratchy, but my mom puts them in the dryer for ten minutes and they get soft." »
Vickie Kelly boasted about her soft towels: "I put them in the dryer for 10 minutes. When I take them out they are very soft.
Lenor laundry experts advise that "the best way to make towels fluffier" is to tumble dry them immediately after washing.
Lenor recommends including a dryer sheet when putting towels in the dryer to preserve their freshness, enhance their "extra softness" and minimize wrinkles.
They also suggest using gentler heat and slower spin settings to protect the towel fibers from damage.
