(CBS DETROIT) – From campus to community, hundreds of Mercy University Detroit students spent Wednesday and Thursday volunteering in neighborhoods across northwest Detroit.
"Knowing that I can open up this alley for everyone to have cars drive by and kids to play is great to see," said student and volunteer Johnea Johnson. "Giving back is something I have always done throughout my life."
Johnson led a team of first-year volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday. Together, the group works to clean up a dilapidated alley near Monica and Florence streets in Detroit's Fitzgerald neighborhood, benefiting neighbors and Mo-Flo, a community garden across the street.
"Thanks to the volunteers, you realize you can't do this alone," said Michelle Benda, whose son Jacob helps manage the community garden. "You can really be inspired by other people in the community who have the same vision. I think that really helps motivate and encourage you."
According to the university, community service and collaboration with the neighborhood are an integral part of the mission of UDM, which has been based in the city since 1877.
