Pet supplies quickly become disgusting. Here are 7 you need to clean up now - AARP

If your dog's bed doesn't fit in your washing machine, go to a laundromat, which usually has larger washers and dryers. Is there no laundromat nearby or you just can't get there? The American Kennel Club website has step-by-step instructions on how to hand wash a dog bed to kill germs. And yes, it's a good idea to clean the insert even if it has a removable cover.

Collars, harnesses and leashes. Dogs typically wear collars and harnesses around the clock, and leashes can be used for daily walks around the neighborhood, trips to the dog park, or visits to the vet. Brian Collins, a veterinarian at Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, says many owners go months without washing these items and recommends a more regular cleaning routine.

"The collars will be contaminated with bacteria, yeast and dander. "They can cause rashes on the pet's neck, especially in dogs," he says.

The best way to clean collars, leashes and harnesses depends on the material. Nylon, fabric, and neoprene items can be soaked in a sink of warm water and scrubbed with a soft brush and dish soap or other all-purpose cleaner; Leather collars, harnesses or leashes should be cleaned with leather care products.

Once these items are washed, Collins recommends allowing them to dry completely before putting them back on your pet, as wet collars or harnesses worn close to the skin can harbor mold and increase the risk of infections and rashes.

Toy. It's enough to throw a tennis ball or play a single game of tug of war to realize that your pet's favorite toys can quickly get dirty. In fact, the National Sanitation Foundation has ranked pet toys among the most germicidal items in your home.

Some toys need to be washed more often than others.

"A toy used outdoors can quickly become dirty and exposed to allergens and possibly parasites," says Collins. "Toys used by dogs that drool a lot or have dental disease can become [smelly] or be contaminated with a lot of bacteria or yeast."

Collins recommends checking manufacturers' instructions for cleaning pet toys. Stuffed toys can generally be washed with soap and warm water or in the washing machine and dryer, while plastic or rubber toys can be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher; Use vinegar instead of dishwashing detergent as a cleaning agent.

sandboxes. Cats prefer clean litter boxes. You should scoop up the cat litter daily and replace the clay litter twice a week (more often if you notice odors or if a lot of the litter is wet or clumped). It is also important to clean and disinfect the litter in the litter box every time you change the litter. Rubbish, says Brister.

"Soap and water work well for general cleaning, but occasional disinfection with diluted bleach is a good idea," he says. "For persistent odors, it is helpful to soak the litter box in an enzymatic odor neutralizer."
