Is it toxic to spray Clorox Plus Tilex on mold? - Daily update

Professional cleaner Vanesa Amaro shows how to properly clean a moldy shower in a TikTok that she posted on August 17. However, viewers expressed concerns about using Clorox to clean up mold.

The video has almost 350,000 views. In it, Amaro removes anything dirty from the shower and sprays the mold with Clorox Plus Tilex Mold and Mildew Spray.

"Wait about three hours and then reapply every hour," he says.

Clorox spray contains 2.4% bleach, which concerns some viewers.

"If you spray Clorox on mold, doesn't that make it more toxic? I think a better option would be vinegar," one viewer wrote.

Is it toxic to spray Clorox products on mold?

According to Bio-One, mixing bleach with mold can produce a toxic gas called chloramine. This can cause many health problems such as chest pain, breathing problems and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.

"It appears that bleach products encourage mold growth, or it can spread further behind cracks in tiles or behind grout in places we can't see," another viewer wrote.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), bleach and other biocides are not effective in completely eliminating a spot of mold. Unless the moisture problem in the shower is addressed, some mold spores will remain and eventually grow back.

A Clorox representative told the Daily Dot that it is safe for customers to spray Clorox Plus Tilex Anti-Mold Spray directly on mold when used as directed in a well-ventilated area.

"We recommend users avoid inhaling the vapor for extended periods of time and use it as directed in well-ventilated areas with open windows and fans," the representative wrote in an email. "If you experience steam, leave the room while the product is in use. »

The EPA also warns that bleach should never be mixed with other cleaning solutions .

Therefore, Amaro asks viewers to rinse off the Clorox spray before using the next product.

Use Scrub Daddy's Cif All-Purpose Cream Cleaner and a Scrub Mommy sponge to clean the shower walls, door, and floor.

"You have to put in a little effort," he says.

Then rinse everything again.

"I was tired after cleaning the shower," says Amaro. "My back hurts a lot because it really needed a thorough cleaning."

Tips to avoid back pain when cleaning

In a 2022 study, almost 80% of housewives reported feeling pain in at least one area of their body.

"Do you have any tips for dealing with back pain after cleaning? I have a hard time doing a thorough cleaning because it ruins my back," one viewer commented.

Several commenters responded with their suggestions. One suggested the viral extendable electric toothbrushes .

"I've had one for years before [TikTok] made them popular and they're a huge help," the commenter wrote.

Another suggested cleaning moldy shower walls with a mop.

"I have one of those telescopic brushes," another viewer wrote. "I saved my back!"

At the end of the video, Amaro points out that the end result isn't "perfect, but it's 100 times better."

The Daily Dot reached out to Amaro via TikTok direct message, but she did not immediately respond.
