Weekend Home Improvement: Five Household Chores To Break Up This Weekend

Ask a practical person and they will tell you: The weekend shifts start the Friday before.

This is where you need to gather your tools, materials and blueprints so that you can break out at sunrise and make the most of the day.

The earlier you start chores like painting and cleaning, the more time things will have to dry, soak and disinfect. The more organized you are ahead of home improvement jobs, the more time you'll spend instead of walking around the hardware store dreaming of more jobs than you possibly could.

CLEAN YOUR CHANNELS

It's the first day of spring next week, and that means you have no more excuses not to tackle your most feared household chore: cleaning the gutters.

As ungrateful as it is, it is a crucial job . A clogged gutter can push water from under the eaves onto your roof and cause leaks. A build-up of leaves can destroy the metal gutters and lead to further leaks.

TOOLS: Ladder and ladder bracket , gloves, trowel and bucket.

WORKING TIME: 2-3 hours depending on the size of the house.

BUILD A GLASS HOUSE

With the arrival of spring and summer, you may want to grow seedlings and make the most of the warm weather to grow tomatoes and eggplants. You're going to need a greenhouse.

There are many options, from cheap plastic houses to The Warehouse and hardware store to bespoke greenhouses, but a small DIY glass house could be as simple as a frame and some windows made from recycled glass.

TIP: Plan your glass house, get advice online or at your hardware store.

WORKING TIME: 1 hour - per day, depending on the size and complexity of the canopy.

Spring cleaning can be cathartic, a great way to sweep, scrub, and fix problems year-round, and metaphorically improve your future prospects. A clean home makes everything else in your life more manageable.

To make it a less monumental task, I tend to spread it out over a few weekends. Whichever route you choose, our handy spring cleaning checklist will help you organize the work.

TOOLS: cleaning products, rags, rags and newspapers (for windows and mirrors). A good pair of gloves.

WORKING HOURS: 2-3 hours a day on two weekends for thorough cleaning.

CLEAN YOUR TOILET DEEPLY

If you still can't solve the full spring cleaning problem, then how about giving your dirtiest household stains a big boost?

TOOLS: detergent, gloves, rag, brush - nose clips, optional.

WORKING TIME: 30 minutes including stain removal time.

STORAGE YOUR PANTRY

If your pantry looks like mine, it's a mess of cans, packages, cans, and jars hanging loosely in any order.

Here is your chance to fix that problem and create the Pinterest- and Instagram-worthy pantry of your dreams! Or at least solve it so you always know where your lenses are.

TOOLS: jars, pocket clips , labels and markers.

WORKING TIME: 1 to 2 hours if you also put your dry products in jars.
