The truth behind the little black dots on kitchen tiles

The warmer months in Australia can only mean one thing ... spiders. And if you noticed small random drops in your home at this time of year, it turns out that there is a connection.

A woman desperate for answers to the sinister black dots on her kitchen tiles went online for help and initially said she hadn't thought of them.

But when more showed up, he reached out to a popular Facebook group for advice.

"Does anyone have any idea what these brands could be?" He asked members of the British group, Ms. Hinch's cleaning tips , along with a photo.

There was an overwhelming response from many people claiming this was spider poop (yes, spider poop). But were the claims true?

Dieter Hochuli, ecologist and professor at the University of Sydney, confirmed to news.com.au that the blackheads are actually spider droppings.

"Spider and fly droppings look the same, and those little spots are droppings that are rich in liquid nitrogen," Professor Hochuli told news.com.au.

"To be honest, I saw them in my house too."

He said the stains on Australian homes are common around this time as warmer weather approaches, but there is nothing to worry about.

"You have no public health risk," said Professor Hochuli, adding, "We live in our daily lives surrounded by hundreds of spiders."

Online the reaction to the dots was overwhelming after the original poster said she noticed the dots appear in "small random dots" around her house.

"This morning it was up on the computer we have in the kitchen," he wrote next to a photo of his tiles.

Many were quick to respond that the stains were spider droppings but that they were "easily washed away".

"Defo Spider Poop came through the door because of the light outside," wrote one member of the group.

"Look up and you will likely see a cobweb / spider," suggested another.

Not everyone agreed, however, and others claimed blackheads could be from flies.

"He really steals shit!" one person wrote.

"A lot happens this time of year, spiders poop everywhere, Dettox spray is good for that," said another.

Last September, another woman shared photos of a similar group of blackheads that were also seen on their baseboards and walls.

Professor Hochuli said people often mistake feces for coffee grounds, especially when standing on kitchen benches.

But if you look around the corners, you will likely see a spider hiding in the nooks and crannies.

To get rid of spider droppings, just use a standard sponge and wipe it off.
