DEM offers virtual training on safe cleaning and disinfection practices

PROVIDENCIA - The Environmental Management Department, in partnership with the Rhode Island Occupational Safety Committee and the Northeast Association of Waste Management Officials, has launched a project to promote an environmentally friendly approach to cleaning and disinfection throughout the cleaning and cleaning process of the Rhode Island community Schools. and southeastern New England.

The project was funded by an Environmental Protection Agency grant to prevent pollution, which focuses on chemical safety, reducing the use of toxic substances and occupational safety.

The project includes a series of virtual training sessions on safe cleaning and disinfection practices, due for the first time on Thursday, April 29th at 10 a.m. Its purpose is to educate the public about the dangers of traditional cleaning chemicals and disinfectants. Many cleaning and disinfecting products on the market today use chemicals such as bleach, phenols and quaternary ammonium compounds that can have negative effects on human health and the environment.

Participants in the training will learn why certain cleaning agents and disinfectants can pose a risk to indoor health and air quality and what steps they can take to control or eliminate them by changing their approach to cleaning and disinfecting and switch to cleaning products. The sessions provide tips on how to ensure safety when using cleaning and disinfecting chemicals and how to replace the Safer Choice program. The most effective way to control hazards is to replace a less hazardous material with a hazardous material.

The program also advocates the implementation of guidelines that introduce changes across the company or institution to move towards safer use of chemicals.
