Spring Style: Houston Designer offers tips on how to keep your home hygienic and stylish all year round

HOUSTON - With the pandemic ongoing and with you stuck in our homes for most of the past year, you may seriously fear your annual spring cleaning. Don't be afraid, lead designer Pamela O'Brien is here to give you interior decorating tips so you can keep your home hygienic and stylish all year round.

"I personally cleaned my counters three or four times a day," said O'Brien. "Being clean is really important and I think it's a design trend that isn't going away."

According to O'Brien, it's no wonder "The Clean Look" became a popular design trend in 2021. The trend is a direct result of the pandemic and consists of a minimalist design that is streamlined and uncluttered.

Design also requires an emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene, incorporating technology and devices that reinforce it. O'Brien says to look for devices with a National Sanitation Foundation NSF label.

"If you remember those three letters and you see these logos, sanitary cycles are available to you," said O'Brien.

Another aspect of the trend is easier cleaning of surfaces. O'Brien recommends high quality quartz countertops, such as Cambria's , that are non-porous and resistant to the microbes common in kitchens and bathrooms.

"What we're looking for is a dense material that will hold up dirt and germs so you can just wipe it off," said O'Brien.

Finally, the spacious outdoor living areas are the perfect addition to your post-pandemic renovations. Outdoor kitchens, dining rooms, and entertaining spaces are the perfect way to welcome friends and family into your home without worrying about clutter.

"Going out was the new way out for almost everyone, and the good thing is you didn't have to invest a lot," said O'Brien. "Some people are modernizing their summer kitchen. Some people install a pool. Other people bought a little more patio furniture.

And for traffic in and out of the house, consider adding a changing room to keep the rest of your home clean.
