Spring cleaning safety tips from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police

Spring cleaning is fast approaching, and the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Department wants to remind the community to be aware of some of the hidden dangers you may encounter while cleaning your neighborhood.

  1. HYPODERMATIC NEEDLES AND SYRINGES: If you have found a hypodermic syringe or needles , do not touch them and contact the local police department. The agents are trained to deal with this type of biohazard.
  2. SUSPECT POWDER OR PILL : Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid. This drug is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine, even a little can be fatal. Fentanyl can be absorbed into the body through inhalation, oral exposure, or ingestion and contact with the skin. If you notice any suspicious powders or pills, contact your local police department immediately and do not attempt to move or transport these substances.
  3. SUSPECTIVE BOTTLES OF LIQUIDS : Methamphetamine (meth) is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. The bottles and cans are now used as makeshift drug laboratories to make methamphetamine. These chemicals used to make methamphetamine can cause toxic fumes or even explosions when mixed.

If you see anything that seems suspicious, contact your local police department immediately. If you come into contact with any of these dangerous substances, seek medical advice immediately. For more information or training on how to detect suspicious substances, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Department at 613-575-2340.
