Australian mom shares her easy way to fix a slow-draining sink - 9Now

Kitchen sink drains are one of those spots in the home that tend to be overlooked in your cleaning routine. This can leave them smelly, dirty, and clogged, which can cause water to flow through the pipe more slowly than it should.

TikTok cleaning guru Carolina McCauley came to the rescue with her method for fixing a slow drain, which she shared in a video tutorial . It only takes a few steps, and the bonus is you'll likely have the staples you need for your pantry on hand.

The materials you will need for this hack are dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, a rag, and hot water.

Carolina begins the process by pouring 1 tablespoon of dish soap down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of vinegar. Then you should cover with a cloth and leave it on for 10 minutes.

When the time is up, Carolina pours hot water down the drain for the final rinse.

"No more slow drains," read the voiceover of the TikTok clip.

The cleaning technique has intrigued fans of the Australian mom, and one is asking what the process actually does to fix a slow drain.

"The vinegar causes the baking soda to react and foam up, pushing the clog or debris down the drain," replied one follower.

While another TikToker said dish soap isn't necessary for this, it actually makes a difference. Detergents, especially those with degreasers, break down fat deposits.

However, there is some debate as to whether mixing vinegar and baking soda will do anything. The products neutralize each other when mixed in equal parts, but some believe the fizzing effect and the carbon dioxide released help clear the drain.

If it's just a smelly drain, you need to fix it. You can omit the baking soda and vinegar and just pour in a small amount of dish soap and then pour hot water over it.

However, if these techniques fail, there may be a major clog in the pipes and it's probably time to call a plumber.
