'Candles and Q-Tips' Earwax Removal: To Do It Or Not? - Click Orlando

Are you one of those people who enjoy watching ear cleaning videos? Believe it or not, videos with the hashtag #earwax have garnered over 5 billion views on TikTok alone.

You will be surprised how many people clean their ears. The experts at Consumer Reports did some serious research to find out the safest way to remove earwax.

Consumer Reports saw a lot of interest in the topic, reviewed it and found a wide range of products that made us wonder how a consumer should approach all of this.

There are "candles" in which a tube of waxed cloth is inserted into the ear and the heat supposedly pulls dirt out of the ear when it is turned on.

You can buy miniature shovels to clean your ears; Some even have a camera so you can see what's happening on your phone.

You may have seen the soft, drill-like devices that manufacturers say allow you to squeeze earwax out of your ear canal. Or the one that looks like a metal whip.

Which ones should you buy? Maybe none, according to emergency doctor Dr. Mauricio Gonzalez.

"We do not recommend cleaning with equipment or in any form," González said.

As for candles, the Food and Drug Administration says to "stay away" and warns consumers about the risk of burns or injury to the inner ear.

Do you really need to remove earwax? Doctors say it actually helps limit bacteria in the ears.

If you have hardened wax or your body produces an abnormal amount, you can use over-the-counter ear drops to soften it and make it easier to remove. But most people have nothing to do at all.

"Every time you chew and move your jaw, that movement alone pushes excess earwax out of your ears. If you feel like something is lodged in the external ear canal, a light washcloth should do the trick. More. Especially after a shower," he told Gonzalez. .

Speaking of earwax, Consumer Reports recommends cleaning earwax from your hearing aids, such as headphones, once a month. This will keep them less "nasty" and your headphones could last longer. Use a paper clip or a soft toothbrush for detail work.
