CHASSELL, Mich. (WLUC) - Dozens of community members and volunteers were on hand Thursday evening to pick hundreds of strawberries ahead of the Strawberry Festival.
The Parc du Centenaire Chassell pavilion is cleaned every year.
The Chassell Lions Club, which organizes the festival, currently has 80 active members. Each year, these members turn to family and friends to help them clean, as well as anyone else who can lend a hand.
This year , between 1,600 and 1,800 liters of strawberries are accompanied by almost 5,500 shortbread cookies . After cleaning, the strawberries are sent to the kitchen.
"There is action in the kitchen," said Stephanie Graef, second vice president of the Chassell Lions Club. "The volunteers mash them up and make this beautiful, beautiful strawberry sauce that goes with the shortbread cookies."
However, these won't be the only strawberries used at the festival. During the festival, fresh berries are picked from nearby farms and sold to visitors.
"People can come and buy gallons of freshly picked berries," Graef added. "Now they leave quickly, so you have to be there early if you want to pick them up."
The festival starts on Friday at 9 a.m. and lasts until Saturday.
