Two more positive Zika virus cases were reported in Pune

July 8, 2024

Two more people tested positive for Zika in Pune, taking the total number of cases to 11. The new cases include a 42-year-old woman from Karvenagar and a 22-year-old man from Kharadi. Both cases are confirmed by the National Institute of Virology.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has started surveillance and containment in Kharadi and Karvenagar areas. The increasing number of cases of the Zika virus outbreak has caused concern among the people of Pune at large. As a result, the PCMC warned civilians to exercise caution. Zika virus cases are increasing day by day and PCMC is carrying out emergency treatment, control and containment particularly in these two areas.

The virus is reportedly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and most infections are mild or asymptomatic.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, PMC health assistant, said, "The man lives in Kharadi, which falls under the jurisdiction of Yerawada-Ahmednagar Road district office. The authorities of the respective districts have been alerted to take preventive measures which will be implemented in and around their residence," he said.

80% of people infected with the Zika virus experience mild symptoms, such as:

Fever, rash, conjunctivitis, joint pain. However, the symptoms are serious. The Zika virus can cause congenital microcephaly, Guillain-Barré syndrome and other neurological complications in pregnant women, officials said.

If such symptoms are observed in you and your loved ones, preventive measures and immediate consultation with a doctor should be encouraged.
