A recent social media post shows how urgent it is for the household goods company to help its customers.
CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A Hampton Roads-based organization is asking the community for help with its awareness efforts.
ForKids is one of Virginia's largest family service providers focused on ending the cycle of homelessness in Hampton Roads.
"Homelessness in Hampton Roads is a major problem and a traumatic experience," said Shirley Brackett, director of crisis response for ForKids.
He explained that this also disproportionately affects families in our area: "We have young children in cars and parks waiting for shelter and housing. »
The summer months put additional pressure on these families as school is closed.
"Summer is particularly hard for low- and middle-income families," Brackett said. "The prices for daycare centers are rising. The children don't go to school and therefore eat more. »
A recent post on the organization's social media Facebook page brings attention to the need for help during the summer months, particularly with household items. The post states that donations of cleaning supplies are urgently needed as "shelves are empty."
"Cleaning supplies make up a large portion of the family budget," Brackett said. "I mean, a box of Tide Pods costs no less than $10. Even if you get SNAP benefits, you can't use them to buy all the other things you need outside of the grocery store, like toilet paper and laundry soap."
This is where ForKids comes in, providing these materials to homeless families and helping them create a clean space as they transition into a home.
"Homelessness makes you a For Kids client, but once we are able to stabilize you and get you back into housing, we typically spend 6 to 15 months with our families to make sure they are stable and ready Brackett said.
The organization now needs the community's help in its mission to support others.
ForKids welcomes every new delivery as a donation. Employees also have an urgent needs list on Amazon where they can purchase items and ship them directly to the organization.
