Although limescale isn't harmful, an expert says it can cause a number of problems, including making kettles less efficient.
Limestone contains calcium carbonate, a mineral that can also give hot drinks a slightly bitter or metallic taste.
Ryan Calvert, product expert at Hiatt Hardware , said: "Limescale buildup in your kettle can cause your appliance to be less efficient overall."
"This makes the heating element work harder and wait longer for hot water, which can shorten the overall lifespan of your kettle.
"Lime also stimulates the growth of bacteria, which can be harmful to health if stored for too long. Below are four practical solutions we recommend for cleaning and descaling your kettle."
1. Baking soda
Baking soda can effectively remove mineral deposits from the interior of a teapot due to its mild abrasive properties and ability to neutralize acids.
Mixed with water, it can help dissolve and remove limescale without damaging the device.
The expert noted: "Simply boil a mixture of baking soda and water in the kettle and let it sit for a while before rinsing well for a clean result." »
2. Tail
The expert continues: "Cola is effective as a descaler because it contains phosphoric acid, which can break down limescale deposits."
"The acidity of cola helps dissolve mineral deposits, making cleaning easier. Simply pour the cola into the kettle, let it sit for an hour and then rinse well.
3. Tomato sauce
Tomato sauce is very acidic, which, according to the professional, makes it an excellent household remedy for limescale.
First unplug and empty the kettle before pouring some tomato sauce into the base and letting it sit for up to an hour before cleaning.
Be sure to bring a kettle filled with water to a boil and empty it for final cleaning before using the water in the appliance.
4. Lemon juice
The expert explains: "Lemon juice effectively descales teapots because its natural acidity helps break down and dissolve mineral deposits.
"Simply light a kettle with a mixture of equal parts water and lemon juice, then bring it to a boil.
"After leaving it on for about 30 minutes, rinse it well to remove any limescale deposits."
All of these items can be purchased in several supermarkets for less than 50p, making them very affordable.
