CAPE CORAL, Fla. ( WBBH ) – A heartwarming community effort in Cape Coral helped an elderly homeowner, Harold LeRiche, clean up his messy property.
LeRiche struggled with health problems and personal difficulties that resulted in piles of trash accumulating in his home. After our report on their situation was published, volunteers from Cape Coral and nearby Fort Myers came forward to help.
The cleanup began after a conversation in a local Facebook group sparked an outpouring of support. Volunteers participated in the effort and donated their time to help LeRiche clear his driveway and yard. LeRiche, unable to cope with the disaster due to poor health, expressed great gratitude for the kindness of strangers.
Kevin Gallagher assisted his daughter-in-law, Kaylee Moskwa, who organized the event. Gallagher expressed disappointment that the city offered no assistance and instead issued tickets for code violations. He said the city should help LeRiche instead of punishing him, who clearly needed support.
As volunteers selected items to donate, sell or throw away, they loaded many of them onto Gallagher's trailer for disposal. The city has since issued a permit for a yard sale on LeRiche's property next weekend. Additional items will be donated to the Salvation Army.
Volunteers also contacted authorities to ask if the fines accumulated over the years could be waived.
For LeRiche, volunteering was a deeply moving experience and he is incredibly grateful for the help he received. The cleanup allowed him to finally see the driveway again, which gave him a great sense of relief and gratitude.
