Workers clean up after vandalism in Bemis Park

BEMIS, Tennessee - Cleaners after vandalism in a local park.

"I came to see it in person, it's rather disappointing that someone is doing it," said Joel Jackson, president of the Bemis Historical Society.

On Tuesday, Jackson police sent out a warning that someone had poured paint in the fountain and two picnic tables in Bemis Park.

"You have to respect your own ground, so to speak," said Jackson.

On Thursday, officials from the Parks and Recreation Department cleared up the mess.

Robert Roy works in front of the park.

"It's annoying, you do not want your community being torn apart here and there, even if she's small, she's not good for the community," Roy said.

Roy says he also saw decorations in front of other street shops that have been destroyed over the years.

Officials scratched the paint on tables and concrete, even with power tools to remove the paint.

"Such things disturb the community and hurt the people who use them from time to time," Roy said.

A resident had something to say to the vandals.

"I think the people who did it should, as the saying goes, have a life," Jackson said.

Park and recreation department officials left at 8:00 pm Thursday to try to remove all colors. They said they should fill the well two or three times and empty it before it completely disappears.
