To sort the tips and tricks that will really help you get the most out of your vacuum from the tips and tricks that you can ignore, 9Honey Living spoke to Rob Roy, National Training Manager and cleaning expert at Godfreys.
Are there ways to maximize the efficiency of a vacuum when in use?
Many people do a quick job of vacuuming the floor and then call it a day. While there's nothing wrong with the occasional quick clean, if you really want to effectively remove dirt, hair, allergens, and pollutants from around your home, you need to be more thorough.
To speed up the process, it is worth removing from the room unnecessary clutter, large debris and small furniture, such as chairs and small tables, or moving them around. This allows you to easily reach all corners around large furniture and vacuum faster.
It is also important that you clean your vacuum cleaner regularly , otherwise dirt could circulate.

I've read that vacuuming slower gives better results, is that correct?
This can be true, but depends on the type of suction head used and the surface being cleaned. Some use a suction head with a motorized rotating brush to clean carpets more thoroughly. Moving it slower allows the brush to work, removing dust and dirt deeper in the stack.
However, on hard surfaces, slower vacuuming doesn't make much of a difference.
Is it worth walking in multiple directions (back and forth) on the ground to collect more dust?
Even a high suction power is usually not enough to completely clean a spot in one go. The best way to ensure all areas are covered is to start in a corner of a room and vacuum horizontally. It also allows you to visit the same places multiple times.
Some people like to lick triangle patterns into their rugs. Is there a cleansing benefit or is it just cosmetic?
There is no cleansing benefit, so someone would only do this for cosmetic reasons.
Which vacuum cleaner parts are best for different tasks?
Although most vacuum cleaners come with a small assortment of tools and accessories, many people skip these and use the same head for all cleaning. Not only does this affect the effectiveness and efficiency of your cleaning, but it can also damage your vacuum cleaner and shorten its lifespan.
Accessories like the crevice vacuum can get into tight spots in corners and around air vents, while the dust brush easily grooms window sills and shelves. You can also use a vacuum upholstery tool for all fabric furniture and a turbo brush for stairs or deep cleaning areas like car interiors.

There have been a few TikTok videos of people "scrubbing" their carpet with a squeegee to remove hair from the floor. Should we do this before sucking?
A thorough cleaning may be necessary, but "scraping" your carpets with a squeegee seems like an inefficient way. Some vacuums have a motorized stiff brush that loosens and sucks up hair as you clean, making the job much faster and easier.
If the normal vacuum cleaner hasn't picked up the hair, the rake can help. But if the vacuum can handle it, you should be fine. Again, it's important to clean your vacuum regularly to prevent buildup and clogs and tangles.

What's your favorite vacuum cleaner tip or trick?
Quickly freshen up your home by adding a few drops of an essential oil like lavender, tea tree or lemon to your vacuum filter. You can also soak a cotton ball in essential oils and place it in the vacuum bag. The fragrance spreads as you purify and refresh the air in your home!
