Everyone has their own routine when it comes to loading their dishwasher. Some people like to pre-wash dirty dishes and cutlery, while others prefer to separate plates from bowls. In some households, an improperly loaded dishwasher can even spark heated debates.
As more of us eat at home and look for ways to save money on our energy bills , more of us are likely to rely on our dishwashers to wash the dishes and cutlery.
Appliance brand AEG has provided some tips to help Brits get the most out of their dishwashers, from loading cutlery to the best wash cycles.
Shuffle your cutlery
It is quite common for homeowners to separate their cutlery when loading their dishwasher, for example loading their knives and forks separately.
However, AEG experts recommended "mixing spoons evenly between knife and fork" when they need "more attention".

If possible, try to use an eco mode when you start your dishwasher.
Eco modes are more efficient and will likely save you money on your energy bills.
AEG experts said: "It might seem counterproductive to leave the laundry on longer, but it is the most energy-efficient option because the faster you wash, the more energy is available to work faster."
If you set your dishwasher on a long hot cycle, the water doesn't have to get as hot.
Clean your dishwasher
You can also clean your dishwasher regularly to keep it running smoothly. Dishwashers should be cleaned once a month to prevent the build-up of bacteria and scale.
Signs that your dishwasher needs cleaning are an unpleasant smell, food residue on the filter or visible to the naked eye, and food residue on cutlery.
To clean your dishwasher, all you need is white vinegar and a dishwasher-safe mug or container. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the container and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Set the dishwasher on a long, hot cycle. When you're done, you can use the dishwasher as usual.
