These 6 spring cleaning hacks will help you stay on budget and do surprisingly well.

With prices soaring for almost everything these days, it's important to stay on budget, even with things like chores and spring cleaning.

An expert shares her cleaning tips and advice, including everyday products you probably already have at home.

Molly Maid brand ambassador Kim Dunn says you don't have to spend a lot to deep clean certain items.

Here's how common products like rice and mouthwash can enhance your spring cleaning in 2023.

Use mouthwash to clean your washing machine

If you have a front-loading washing machine, you may have noticed oil and suds buildup in the glass.

A good way to clean your machine is to simply use mouthwash.

"It's a germ killer. It breaks down oils. It refreshes you [and] makes you smell great," says Dunn.

All you have to do is put a cup of mouthwash in the drum of your washing machine and run it on a hot or sanitize program.

Use toothpaste to clean reusable containers

Do you also hate spaghetti or other sauces that stain your reusable containers?

Toothpaste is actually a great way to not only remove stubborn odors, but also remove stains from your Tupperware.

According to Dunn, all you need to do is take a small spoonful of toothpaste and give the container a good scrub with a brush or cloth.

Use a tennis racket to remove dust from the cushions

Dust can collect on your sofa cushions and even on your carpets.

Using a tennis racket outdoors will not only help you get rid of all that dust, but it's also a great stress reliever.

"Once you've done that, you might as well leave them out in the sun because (...) the ultraviolet rays refresh and remove bad odors and you also remove all the dirt," advises the cleaning expert.

Clean reusable bottles with rice

Returnable bottles can be difficult to clean, especially those with a narrow mouth.

Dunn says instead of trying to stick a rag in, try uncooked rice.

All you have to do is put some rice, some soap and some cold water in your water bottle and shake well.

"The rice actually acts as an abrasive and will clean up the scum and whatever's left behind," Dunn told Narcity.

Use wax paper to clean a can opener.

Can openers can get pretty messy, and Dunn says they should be cleaned after each use.

She recommends folding a piece of wax paper into a square, tape it under the sheet, then pinch and twist the can opener.

"It actually loosens all the dirt that's behind the blade," says Dunn. "He actually puts a little bit of wax on it to make it easier and food and things don't stick."

Use salt to clean your iron

Your iron is another piece of equipment that needs cleaning every year.

A safe way to clean it is to lay out some newspaper and sprinkle table salt over it.

Then heat your iron and circle it over the salt.

"The salt acts like sandpaper (...) and just removes the marks and dirt," says Dunn.

Be sure to wipe off any salt residue afterwards so it doesn't transfer to your clothes.
